Infrared Photography

Photography with infrared light has come into its own with the advent of digital technology. IR is normally suppressed by low pass filters in the cameras we buy, but when these are removed and a black filter is placed in front of the lens to keep out ordinary light, a different kind of image emerges.

Living plants glow white due to their interaction with the invisible radiation and a radiance results, not unlike the effect of snow on a winter scene. And blue skies are darkened because IR is scattered and less of it reaches the camera.

So the balance of the picture is changed producing an air of unreality in the landscape. All the pictures on display are monochromatic infrared images taken in the last few months in Upper Nidderdale.
