Current Work
Staithes
" I have really enjoyed this collection of work and having
the chance to immerse myself in Staithes,
it's bygone
charms and history of artists. It has encouraged me to
work plein air, and although not many pieces were
completed on location, they were all started there,
establishing the light and atmosphere of each piece.
With making four dedicated trips to the coast to paint,
it also meant the work was done whatever the weather,
or tide times, or light.
It's also been somewhat of a personal trip too. I knew my great Uncle Stephen Dennison was a good friend of Lamorna Birch, one of the Newlyn artists, and that Laura Knight had joined the same artists colony after her time spent painting in Staithes. Having spent some time researching this connection, digging into family scrap books and Stephen's visitors book from the 1940's, I've discovered a great deal about my family I never knew, my great uncle's numerous Royal Accademy successes, and not least discovering pencil drawings of him by the late Dame Laura Knight.
Visiting Staithes this summer and autumn, I had a great sense of there being a reason for me being there, the more I read about my family and the connection, the more it satsfied my reason. "
