ramsgill studioAutumn Light Over Gouthwaite by Sarah Garforth

Jo Yeaman

Having spent most of my formative years being close to nature, I feel a very strong connection to all things wild and natural. Therefore, my artistic direction is strongly inclined towards capturing the beauty, vulnerability and character of animals, great and small. My preferred mediums are watercolour and soft pastel.

As the eyes are the very soul of the animal, through which I believe they speak, it is my primary aim to capture that spark and bring it to life.

Working in watercolour for hare studies, using a combination of loose washes and very fine detail, I endeavour to create a creature, both lifelike but querky. I use my own photos of local hares for reference and also love to study them in their natural habitat.

I work in soft pastel for my sheep studies. Not too difficult to be able to snap some great sheep photos in the Yorkshire Dales! From these, I love to try to capture something of their underrated character.
